In Chennai, K Annamalai has made a brave move by forming a group with the BJP leading in Tamil Nadu. This comes a year after suggesting that the party should stand alone, starting with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, to earn people’s trust in the long term.

Annamalai BJP:- The BJP formed a new group with parties seen as weaker than its old partner, the AIADMK. Still, the BJP is putting forward many candidates. This move puts the BJP and Annamalai in a key position for either success or failure in the state.
Annamalai BJP:- In March 2023, Annamalai first mentioned ending his connection with the AIADMK, an important partner. Even before the BJP considered his ideas, the major Dravidian party granted his wish by leaving the NDA in September.
Annamalai BJP :-stayed strong, even though the BJP leaders thought differently, while every attempt to reconcile with the AIADMK was rejected by them. The idea is that if the BJP wants to become an alternative to the major Dravidian parties, it should grow on its own by competing without forming an alliance with them.
Annamalai BJP:- Certainly, the party members are optimistic about the BJP’s chances. They think that Annamalai’s En Mann, En Makkal tour, which covered all 234 assembly areas in seven months, has spread the party’s message all across the state. The party also believes that Annamalai’s bold approach, where he challenges both the DMK and AIADMK directly, will attract people who want an alternative to the major Dravidian parties to the BJP.
Annamalai BJP:- Teaming up with PMK and AIADMK rebels like TTV Dhinakaran and OPS might benefit the BJP in the north and south of the state. The party also aims to make progress in western TN by itself, as Annamalai is from there and comes from a strong caste, the Gounders.
Annamalai BJP:- “BJP will likely get double-digit votes by itself, while the alliance might get around 20% if it divides the votes against the government and DMK. The NDA needs to make sure that votes against the government don’t all go to AIADMK. The important thing is who gets the most votes against the DMK,” said senior journalist Maalan Narayanan to DH.
Annamalai BJP:- R Bhagwan Singh, who has been reporting on Tamil Nadu for more than thirty years, says Annamalai’s main challenge is changing the idea in rural areas that the BJP is only for saffron and not inclusive. He needs to persuade people to vote for his party.
